The State of Same-Sex Marriage in the Union


Bills barring recognition of same-sex marriage have been introduced in 34 state legislatures since 1995. A breakdown:


GAY MARRIAGE BAN ENACTED:
Alaska, Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee and Utah.

BILLS PENDING:
California, Michigan, Missouri, New York, North Carolina and Pennsylvania.
The Missouri bill has passed the legislature and awaits the
governor's action.

BILLS DEFEATED OR WITHDRAWN:
Alabama, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine,
Maryland, New Mexico, Rhode Island, Virginia,
Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
