For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall understand fully, even as I have been fully understood.1 Corinthians 13:12
I have been remiss at writing my devotionals. To my regular readers, I apologize. I know some of you have come to rely on my ramblings to help you center your lives on God. I am humbled and pleased that you miss the devotions when they are not here.
The reason for my absence has been the beginning of school. For those of you who do not know, I am attending seminary, working toward a Masters of Theological Studies. These past two weeks have been hectic. The days have been filled with orientation to a new place and many new people. It's also been an eye-opening experience of myself.
We all like to think we have a handle on our theology and would be willing to stand our principles and ideals next to anyone else's. In theory that's great, but in reality, there are some hard lessons to learn when you cross theological swords with others. I have found many at school who think along the same lines I do, but an equal number disagree with my belief system.
I couldn't help but think of the words of Paul to the Corinthians as I struggled to keep a sense of self this week. I came to realize that my theology, my concepts and beliefs about God, could be all wrong. I'm not convinced that they are, but when my beliefs are held in tandem with those who hold diametrically opposed views, I begin to see our common ground. Paul says it: "we see in a mirror dimly" -- every single one of us.
Someone else's theology may be radically different from my own ... they may be downright incompatible. But we've all got just a piece of the grand puzzle of God; we all "know in part."
Paul's promise is a source of jubilation, however, for one day we will see face to face, and fully understand the unfathomable grace of God. I long for that day, but until then, I will continue my search for God. I will continue to strive to educate my faith, and challenge my beliefs.
I'll continue to share my insights and beliefs with you as I make this educational journey. In doing so I hope that you, too, will earnestly seek to understand the puzzle of God, and how we all fit into the picture.
Blessings,
Candace
