It is not for us to say who, in the deepest sense, is or is not close to the spirit of Christ. We do not see into men's hearts. We cannot judge, and are indeed forbidden to judge. It would be wicked arrogance for us to say that any man is, or is not, a Christian in this refined sense.

When a man who accepts the Christian doctrine lives unworthily of it, it is much clearer to say he is a bad Christian than to say he is not a Christian.

C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

I received a letter from a reader recently, concerned that in a previous devotional I had said that I believe Pat Robertson and other conservative Christians are true Christians. The reader made the point that they couldn't be Christians because they sure don't act like ones.

Certainly she makes a good point, but I am loathe to point fingers at anyone and say "you're not a Christian." It's been done so many times to me, I know how it can make one feel.

The passage from C.S. Lewis is the heart of the philosophy I've adopted. Those who say I am not Christian do not know my heart .. only God does. Some may say I'm a bad Christian because they believe I am remaining in sin as a lesbian. Fine, I can accept that .. just don't deny my Christianity, because that's not your place.

That's the same respect I extend to Robertson, et al. I can't see their hearts, only God can. However, I do see their actions. Yes, their actions, at times, are most unChristian .. but since they profess belief in Christ, I'd rather call them bad Christians than non-Christians.

I hope that by extending this bit of respect to Christians who disagree with me, that one day it will be returned. I have little hope of it happening in my lifetime. But our God is a God of miracles. So, who knows?

The reader also asked in her letter, "what would Jesus do?" I think Jesus would call them on their hypocritical actions .. but would never call them unbelievers. That's exactly what he did to the Pharisees.

Blessings,
Candace
