Sometimes, it seems that my resolutions are simply forgotten amid the daily routine and care of life. Often I make too many of them, or the resolutions I make end up being too difficult. They may take up too much time or be too ambitious or maybe they just didn't fit into my lifestyle. They have tended to be related almost solely to my physical health: weight loss, exercise, you know the drill.
This year, I need to begin by slashing from my list unimportant or unkeepable resolutions. ("How likely is it that I can make it through an entire year without eating any dessert?" I ask, "and is it critically important that I do?") At the same time, I would like to put more emphasis on resolutions which will deepen my walk with Christ as well as my relationships with loved ones. Here are some of the ideas I am pondering.
Can I find a way to spend more quality time with my children and my grandson?
What about the need to slow down and relax? Perhaps I should learn yoga or Tai Chi (...believe it or not, there are videos which teach you how to do these things while seated!) These are spiritual disciplines, not just physical exercise.
Can I pray and meditate more regularly?
What if I were to spend more time outside enjoying God's creation, and less time staring at the TV or computer screen?
Maybe I should focus this year's reading on inspirational literature and the Bible?
If I spend less time in small talk and more time in meaningful conversation with others, perhaps I can share with them my experience with Christ and His influence on my life.
I encourage you to explore what you can do differently during this new year. Can you deepen your spiritual walk? Become a better steward of your time, talents and treasure? Be a witness to Christ's presence and relevance in the GLBT community? Whatever you decide to do, may God bless your efforts and intent.
